There’s An App for That!

WASHINGTON, 13 May 2015 — The Coast Guard is scheduled to release its first boating safety App Saturday as the kickoff to this year’s National Safe Boating Week.

The Boating Safety Mobile app was not designed to replace a boater’s marine VHF radio, which the Coast Guard strongly recommends all boaters have aboard their vessels. The app was mainly designed to provide additional boating safety resources for mobile device users.

The app will be available on the Apple and Google Play online stores.

Features of the app include: state boating information; a safety equipment checklist; free boating safety check requests; navigation rules; float plans; and calling features to report pollution or suspicious activity.  When location services are enabled, users can receive the latest weather reports from the closest National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather buoys as well as report the location of a hazard on the water.

The app also features an Emergency Assistance button which, with locations services enabled, will call the closest Coast Guard command center.

The app is self-contained, so personal information is stored on the phone and is not sent to the Coast Guard unless the user chooses to send it. The Coast Guard does not track a user’s location, and the app does not track a user’s location unless the app is being used. The app was developed over a two-year period with BastayaPR, a non-profit organization in Puerto Rico.

National Safe Boating Week, which takes place May 16 – 22, is an annual event that encourages all boaters to practice safe boating. For more information on National Safe Boating Week as well as general boating safety information, please visit http://www.safeboatingcampaign.com/ and http://www.safeboatingcouncil.org.

For more information on the app, please visit http://www.uscg.mil/mobile or contact Lt. Anastacia Visneski at (202) 372-4648.

Inflatable, Towable, and Fun, but Be Careful

Inflatable ride-on devices are all the rage these days. While towing someone on one of these rides can be a lot of fun, please do it safely. This short, informative video from the Water Sports Industry Association shows how.

Special NSBW Issue of RBS-Job #1

Check out our special National Safe Boating Week issue of RBS-Job #1, which provides ideas and encourages your participation in organizing and supporting boating safety events.

National Safe Boating Week is the premier Recreational Boating Safety event for the year, highlighting the need for boating safety at the peak of anticipation of the prime recreational boating and watersports season. Thanks to the efforts of the National Safe Boating Council in promoting this event, with the active participation of the U.S. Coast Guard, us in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and all of our partner organizations in promoting boating and water safety we are able to organize and get the attention of national and local media.

The articles in this issue are intended to help you and your flotilla have an active week and participate in highly publicized events. For greater effect combine efforts with partners, depending on your area but possibly including your state department of natural resources, your U.S. Power Squadron, the American Canoe Association (ACA) and other local groups promoting water safety.

A thought on “Wear Your Lifejacket to Work Day:” why not tell your co-workers about it, take in some extra lifejackets for them to wear and have a group photo taken? If you organization has an employee newsletter, let them publish the photo and provide it to your FSO-PA and PB and CS to be included in your flotilla and division newsletter, website and for news media. Even if you don’t wear them (maybe you can’t) for more than the photo you will get lasting publicity and make the point.

So please check out the articles in this issue, and for your convenience they are linked from the Table of Contents, so one click gets to the article of your choice, and back for the next article.

Enjoy, communicate and participate!

Introducing Our New Newsletter: RBS Job #1

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is proud to release the first issue of a new, consolidated publication featuring news on Recreational Boating Safety Outreach for Instructors, Vessel Examiners, Program Visitors and all Coast Guard Auxiliarists interested in recreational boating safety. This new publication, titled “RBS Job #1,” fits with the increased significance of RBS to the CG Auxiliary and moving forward on the National Strategic Plan for RBS.

This consolidates the former publications ‘For Safety’s Sake’, ‘Waypoints’ and EdVantage’, and WAVES (Watercraft and Vessel Safety), newsletters formerly produced separately by the RBS Outreach, Public Education and Vessel Examination and Partner Visitation Directorates.

We have the articles linked in this newsletter, so a click on a title in the Table of Contents will take you to that article. While this will allow you to go to the articles of most interest to you, we of course encourage you to take a look at what is new in all of the disciplines in RBS.

We also encourage readers to submit articles on RBS topics for publication. Please send your articles to Mel Borofsky.

USCG Auxiliary and US Power Squadrons: Focus on “US”

As part of our mandate, the US Coast Guard has entrusted the Auxiliary with the task of coordinating our efforts to harness the cooperative strength of the entire RBS Community to improve safety in, on, and around the water. One of our primary partners in this collective effort is the United States Power Squadrons (USPS).

In an effort to spread this message to every district, division, and flotilla, the Auxiliary’s National Commodore, the National Executive Committee (NEXCOM), and the Director of the RBS-Outreach Directorate have approved (and do encourage) sharing the attached document at every Auxiliary level.

Please share it with your members and publish it (or a link to it) in your publications. For more information or assistance in coordinating inter-group contacts, please contact Nan Ellen Fuller, our Branch Chief, Liaison to the USPS (BC-BLU); her contact information is available to qualified Auxiliary members in AuxData.
